Dangers in Southeast Asia: What To Know Before You Exotic Vacation
You have planned for months and now, your trip to the beautiful countries of Southeast Asia is finally upon you. You have purchased your plane ticket, reserved your hotel rooms, and planned an itinerary. But are you truly prepared for the journey ahead of you? Southeast Asia, just like many places of travel, is full of exotic beauty and wonder. But it can also be full of danger. Being prepared does not mean that you are being negative or pessimistic. It just means that if the worst happens, you and your travel-mates would be ready for it. Read below to discover some of the concerns you may face when you travel to Southeast Asia and how you can prevent dangers from affecting your trip.
Health Concerns
The area known as Southeast Asia includes Brunei Darussalam, Burma, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Singapore. The first concern that you may face is one that travelers face whenever they leave the country: traveler’s diarrhea. Traveler’s diarrhea can be caused by several different factors. It may be caused by different kinds of food, a parasite, bacteria or virus in the water or even time zone changes. In addition to traveler’s diarrhea, travelers should also take precautionary measures to avoid contracting plague, encephalitis, malaria, and other such diseases.
Southeast Asia and Violence
Travelers should also be aware of the threat of terrorism in Southeast Asia. In July of 2003, Simon Elegant and Mageswary Ramakrishnan reported on the threat of terrorism in Southeast Asia. The article written in TIME ASIA magazine rehashed the Bali incident in which Indonesian bombers used potassium chlorate to “whip out the tourist trade in Bali.” The concern is that Southeast Asia may be targeted by inner-members of al-Qaeda. What makes the situation more troubling for Americans is that tourist attractions where large groups are gathered may be a target. When traveling to Southeast Asia, be aware of all that is around you. Make notes of strange activity and trust your instincts.
Regardless of the dangers that travelers to Southeast Asia may or may not face, the region offers exotic beauty and adventure.
